How it works & the NEC rules behind it

Water and electricity represent severe shock hazards. NEC Article 680 sets stringent requirements for swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, and hydromassage bathtubs to eliminate voltage gradients in the pool area.

Core Article 680 Electrical Requirements:

  • 1. Equipotential Bonding Grid (§680.26): An equipotential bonding grid using not smaller than #8 AWG solid bare copper conductor must connect:
    • Structural pool shell (rebar or copper grid)
    • Perimeter perimeter surface extending 3 feet (1 m) horizontally around pool, 4"–6" below subgrade
    • Metallic pool fittings, ladders, handrails, and diving boards
    • Pool pump motors and metal equipment within 5 feet of water.
  • 2. Pool Pump Motor Protection (§680.21(C)): Outlets supplying pool pump motors (both 120V and 240V, single-phase or three-phase) must have Class A GFCI protection.
  • 3. Overhead Conductor Clearances (Table 680.9):
    • Power lines (0–750V): Minimum 22.5 feet (6.86 m) above water level; 14.5 feet above diving platforms.
    • Cable TV / Telecom lines: Minimum 10.0 feet clearance.
  • 4. Underwater Luminaires (§680.23): Low-voltage luminaires operating at ≤ 15V AC (or 30V DC) supplied by listed isolating transformers are preferred. Line-voltage (120V) luminaires require GFCI protection and brass/stainless grounding terminals.

Worked example, step by step

Example: Electrical Requirements for an In-Ground 16×32 ft Residential Pool

Installation: 16×32 ft in-ground concrete pool with 2 HP 240V pump, 12V LED light, and 3 ft concrete deck.

  • 1. Equipotential Grid: Install continuous #8 AWG solid bare copper conductor embedded in the rebar and extending 3 ft around deck perimeter, bonded at 4 points.
  • 2. Pump Circuit: 2 HP pump (12A @ 240V) requires a 20A 2-Pole GFCI Circuit Breaker with #12 AWG Cu wire and insulated #12 EGC.
  • 3. Low Voltage Light: 12V LED light connected to a listed pool transformer located at least 5 ft horizontally from pool edge (§680.24).
  • 4. Clearances: Verify no utility overhead lines cross within 22.5 ft above the water level.

Frequently asked questions

Under NEC §680.26(B), the bonding grid conductor must be an 8 AWG or larger solid copper conductor because stranded copper corrodes and deteriorates much faster when buried directly in damp soil or concrete containing pool chemicals.

NO. Equipment grounding (EGC) provides a path for fault current back to the panel to trip the circuit breaker. Equipotential bonding connects all metal surfaces in the pool area together so they all stay at the exact same electrical potential, eliminating voltage differentials that cause electrocution.
