How it works & the NEC rules behind it

The National Electrical Code mandates two distinct types of personnel and property protection devices that operate on different principles:

  • GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter — §210.8): Protects humans from lethal electric shock and electrocution by sensing imbalances between hot and neutral currents as low as 4 to 6 milliamperes (mA) within milliseconds.
  • AFCI (Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupter — §210.12): Protects structures from electrical fires by detecting dangerous electrical arcing (sparking from frayed cords, punctured Romex, loose wire terminals) that standard thermal-magnetic breakers ignore.
  • Dual-Function (DFCI / AFCI+GFCI): Combines both arc-fault and ground-fault protection in a single circuit breaker or receptacle device.

Example Scenario: Kitchen Remodel Wiring Requirements

Scenario: You are adding two 20A small appliance branch circuits for kitchen countertops and a dedicated 120V circuit for a garbage disposal and dishwasher.

  • Kitchen Countertop Receptacles: Required to have both GFCI (§210.8(A)(6)) and AFCI (§210.12(A)). Solution: Install 20A Dual-Function AFCI/GFCI circuit breakers.
  • Dishwasher: Required to have GFCI (§210.8(D)) and AFCI (§210.12(A)). Solution: Dedicated 15A/20A Dual-Function breaker.

Frequently asked questions

No. Standard GFCI outlets only detect ground faults (current leaking to ground) and do not detect series or parallel arc faults. To satisfy both requirements, you must either install a combination Dual-Function (AFCI+GFCI) breaker/outlet or an AFCI circuit breaker upstream of a GFCI receptacle.

Under NEC 2020, 2023, and 2026 §210.8(A) & §210.8(F), GFCI protection is required for all outdoor outlets up to 50A (including mini-split heat pumps and central AC units), and appliances in laundry/kitchen areas supplied by single-phase branch circuits rated 150V to ground or less (e.g. 120/240V dryers and ovens).
